Man Ray was an American modernist artist who was famous for his painting, photography and film maker.
Man Ray's photography was based on surrealism, the subject matter for most of his images focus on people. Also Man Ray used objects to exaggerate emotion for example, the picture below of the women crying Man Ray had decided to use marbles to create the tears on her face.
The subject matter of Man Ray’s work that I am looking at is the female form. Both images are black and white film photographs that Man Ray would have developed in the darkroom, he was working in the 1920s/30s. The Tears picture is close up and on an angle, which gives the feeling of being off balance. The work is looking at the theme of real and fake. The artist is interested in the idea of reality. He is using a mixture of people and objects to get across his ideas. I am interested in looking at this work because of the traditional techniques that Man Ray uses. I also like the ‘odd’ look to his pictures. I want to use a combination of old and new techniques in my work. The work has been created with a model and objects in a studio. Man Ray would have sued a film camera and processed the work in a darkroom. Both of the pictures are linked by the theme of surrealism. I would like to use some of Man Ray’s ideas and techniques in my own work. click the button below to view my photos hoot inspired by Man Ray. |
